About Kyst
Kyst is a small bicycle company. Right now, it’s also just me.
I started Kyst because I wanted to build the kind of bikes I like to ride: capable, comfortable, good looking and designed for long days on mixed terrain. Bikes that feel considered rather than generic, and that are made in a way that gives some room for individuality.
I’ve spent a large part of my life riding bikes, taking them apart, changing them, travelling with them and thinking far too much about why some bikes just feel better than others. Kyst grew out of that experience, but also from learning to actually make things — designing frames, selecting tubing, brazing, painting and gradually building up the skills and equipment needed to produce complete bikes properly.
There isn’t a design department, a marketing team or a production line hidden somewhere behind the website. I design the bikes, build the frames, paint them and assemble the finished bicycles here on the Norwegian coast.
That has limitations, but it also has advantages. I can spend time on the details, make changes when something doesn’t feel right and learn directly from every bike that leaves the workshop. There is very little distance between the idea, the person building it and the person eventually riding it.
Kyst is still new, and I’m not interested in pretending otherwise. The aim is to build a reputation slowly by making good bicycles and looking after the people who buy them.
Where it’s going
The ambition is bigger than a one-person workshop.
I want Kyst to grow into a small Norwegian bicycle manufacturer: still building distinctive bikes in relatively small numbers, but using better processes, new materials and modern manufacturing methods to make local production more capable and commercially sustainable.
That will take time. For now, Kyst remains deliberately small, and every bike still passes through one pair of hands.
